Episode 2 begins with day at Day 3 of Lady Jane Grey's reign. Princess Mary gathers support to make her bid for the throne. Duke of Northumberland works to make sure Lady Jane stays on the throne. The attack on Mary begins.
Nobody believes that Mary can take the English Throne. The King had changed the succession to the English throne and it seems that Lady Jane Grey will become Queen. Meanwhile, Mary sends out letters to gather support for her claim to the English Throne. The locals in East Anglia start to gather to support Mary's claim because she was the rightful Queen. She moves to Suffolk, continuing to call for support. Lady Jane Grey lives in the Tower under the watchful eye of the Duke of Northumberland. Lady Jane Grey's father was chosen to lead the army against Princess Mary, but Lady Jane Grey keeps him behind and sends the Duke of Northumberland in his place. This decision may have lead to her downfall. The Duke of Northumberland was the one who holds the coup together and by sending him away the coup might not be able to hold the throne. The Duke of the Northumberland marches on Princess Mary but badly underestimates the support Princess Mary has in the country. Helen Castor explores the life and death of Lady Jane Grey, the Nine Days Queen of England. Castor explores why Lady Jane Grey was selected as Queen of England, the secrecy behind the plot to put her on the throne and the fight to keep her on the throne.
This is a careful look at the life of Lady Jane Grey and takes place over 3 episodes. Each episode takes at least three days of the nine days reign. Lady Jane Grey is a tricky subject in English history, there are plenty of angles to take. This documentary allows the viewer to make up their own minds on Lady Jane Grey Grey. The episode kicks off with the death of the King and the documents that were made concerning about his death. There were concerns surrounding what would happen if the King were to die and if the Catholic Princess Mary would take the throne. With the dissolution of the monasteries, the noble class enriched themselves and of course they would want to protect their interest. However the entire succession fell to women, not a man in sight. It was in this environment, Lady Jane Grey was put forward to become the Protestant Queen of England. A few years ago, I discovered Historian Lucy Worsley and loved how she narrated history on top of getting into character for a few of her series! The first series I found from her was Heroines, Housewives and Harlots and the History of the Home on YouTube. Unfortunately you can't get Heroines, Housewives, and Harlots on YouTube any more.
Recently, PBS discovered this gem of a historian and started airing her documentaries. The first documentary PBS aired was the Six Wives of Henry VIII. Recently, PBS aired Royal Myths and Secrets and so I came up with questions for that series. If any teacher needs a video for a sub in history class, either in the theme of the day or something fun, I would highly recommend looking into Lucy Worsley! The first episode of the series is about Elizabeth I and focuses on the myths that came out of the Spanish Armada. The episode kicks off with Elizabeth's imprisonment and how Queen Mary treated her and how Philip freed her because he didn't want the French to expand their influence. Then when Elizabeth becomes queen, he tries to persuade her to marry him or at least dump the Protestant faith. Then Worsley moves onto the factors that lead to the Spanish Armada and reveals that not everything is at it seems. You can use this series as lecture supplement for a history class. You can highlight, copy, and paste the questions into a Word, GoogleDoc or Google Classroom document for use in school or home school. Format it the way you want to. Royal Myths Elizabeth I and the Spanish Armada Answers:
King Henry VIII - this king has had more documentaries and TV shows about him than.... I would say the current queen but that's not true. It's fascinating to see the endless angles the various historians take on this most famous English King and we will still be talking about him in 3030.
A new documentary was released on Henry VIII in 2020 called Henry VIII - Man, Monarch, Monster. The first episode covers Henry VIII as a man and how his childhood impacted the way he ruled. The historians cover how his mother influenced him growing up, that he grew up in a female environment and how is mother's death changed his life. He wasn't meant to be king, but then his brother Arthur died. His childhood changed and he started to learn what would make him a king and how to govern according to the rules and traditions of England. Henry VIII's first acts as king was to have some of his father's oldest advisors arrested, which signaled a new start for the English and they called the start of the reign as a new dawn in England. It was fascinating to learn that they waited 48 hours before proclaiming Henry VIII King. Nowadays, that would be unheard of if a political leader died. Everyone was thrilled with the new King. His second act was to marry Catherine of Aragon and together they would oversee a new England. The historians go over old documents in order to get into the mind of Henry VIII. If you need some research into Henry VIII for a class lecture, I recommend you use this documentary just for the fact it offers another perspective on Henry VIII, more so than the typical "Henry VIII was a madman." I created several questions to go with this documentary. Just copy and paste them into a word document to distribute in the classroom just in case you decide to use this series in the classroom. Since there's a lot available out there on Henry VIII, I want the student to have a chance to reflect on what they learned about Henry VIII. You can format anyway you want.
