Will the city of Troy be found? The Lost Worlds series look at the city of Troy. The run time for this episode is 49:53. This documentary is divided up into chapters for easy division and easy viewing.
For centuries, archeologists have tried to find Troy. It was a city lost to the ages. Troy was the site of the Trojan War and the fight over Helen of Troy. It was a store that was retold over centuries. However, did the city of Troy exist? One archeologist believed that he discovered Troy. That satisfied most of the world except for professional archeologists. Now a team goes back to the site of this discovery to see what can be found about Troy and the Trojan War. Upon first glance, the small hill does not look like much. However, this hill was a gateway to the past and it is here where tourists visit. These tourists believe they are visiting the city of Troy. However, the experts are skeptical. They question the existence of Troy and if it did was the city really on this hill. However, an archeological team has worked for fifteen years and their findings may resolve the issue once and for all. The team has found multiple layers showing periods of human settlement. It is a challenge to go through each layer of habitation. The story of Troy begins with the Iliad by Homer. The Iliad was originally performed by actors in ancient Greece. However, was this a work of imagination, or was it based on history? Tory was ruled by a king. This kind had a son called Paris. Paris fell in love with a beautiful woman Helen, a Greek princess. Helen was the most beautiful woman in the world and was already married. Paris kidnaps her and brings her back to Troy. The Greeks and Trojans fought it out for over ten years. The Greeks decided to give up and left behind a gift for the Trojans. A horse that housed Greek soldiers. The gift is brought into the city and the Greeks ended the siege. However, was the story true? Heinrich Schliemann was an archeologist who thought the Trojan War was real and would set out to prove it. Modern archeologists believe that Schliemann had done great damage to the site. He carved a massive trench in the middle of the site. He discovered nine different settlements over the years. Each of these settlements built upon one another over the years. Schliemann discovered a gold treasure and claimed that it belonged to the Trojan King. This gold hoard proved to Schliemann that the Iliad was true. However, testing is done and it proved that the treasure belonged to an earlier period. It had no connection to the Trojan War. Then the documentary follows another archeologist who believes that Troy and this site are the same. This excavation centers on layer number six, and this layer would have been around during the Trojan war. The problem was that from the description in the Iliad this layer could not be Troy. The archeologist believes that there was more to the site than meets the eye. He employs magnetometry and the results show as the site was much bigger than what was thought. The results showed streets and buildings. Even more, technology was brought in to help map the site. Water features are discovered which shows that this hill site had a port. Slowly a picture of a Bronze Age Troy emerges with every find. Does this hill site match Troy in Homer’s story? Did the Trojan War happen? Will the archeologists find evidence of warfare? Tune into the rest of this episode to find out! This episode was missing Bettany Hughes. I enjoyed learning about the Trojan War and Helen of Troy from her. It was also quite annoying that they did not display the names of the archeologists working on the site. Despite missing Bettany, this documentary does provide a good foundation for learning about Troy and the Trojan War. The information was presented well and it was fun to see the finds that were discovered. I could see the potential in using this in an English class when there is a discussion in the Illiad.
